Understanding the Crude Oil Trend

The chart above displays the most recent spot prices for Brent and WTI crude oil. These are the two primary global benchmarks used to price the vast majority of internationally traded oil.

When tracking crude oil price charts, context matters. Short-term movements (like a 7-day trend) are often driven by news headlines, inventory reports, or macroeconomic data releases. Longer-term trends (like 30-day or more) typically reflect structural shifts in global supply and demand, OPEC+ production policies, or major geopolitical events.

Why Chart Data Lags Real-Time Futures

Most "live" crude oil price charts available for free on the internet are actually showing futures contract prices delayed by 10 to 15 minutes. The chart on this page is different: it shows official spot market prices published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). The EIA publishes this data the following business day. While this means the chart lags the immediate tick-by-tick action of futures markets, spot prices are the benchmark standard used in physical oil contracts worldwide.
