Why the Brent Crude Price Matters
When news headlines report on world oil prices today or the international crude oil price, they are almost always referring to Brent crude. It is the most widely adopted oil benchmark in the world, used to price roughly two-thirds of the world's internationally traded crude.
Originally, "Brent" referred to oil extracted from the Brent oilfield in the North Sea. Today, the benchmark is based on a basket of North Sea crude grades (BFOET: Brent, Forties, Oseberg, Ekofisk, and Troll). Because it is extracted at sea, it is easily transported globally via tanker, making the international oil price highly sensitive to global supply and demand dynamics, geopolitical events, and macroeconomic shifts.
Brent vs WTI
While Brent is the global standard, WTI (West Texas Intermediate) is the primary North American benchmark. Brent typically trades at a premium to WTI (meaning it is slightly more expensive). This price gap is known as the Brent-WTI spread, and it fluctuates based on pipeline constraints, U.S. crude export economics, and regional disruptions.
